Coast Guard questions Kulluk witnesses on towing system, voyage during winter

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) — Professionals involved in the movement of the conical drill unit Kulluk testified that it was safe to tow the vessel through rough winter weather, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Shell had chosen appropriate towing vessels and the right towing system, according to one witness who had been involved in moving the vessel on another occasion. Thirty-foot seas were not in the forecast when the Kulluk tow departed Dutch Harbor in what would become an ill-fated voyage that resulted in a grounding.
