(NEW YORK) — Five Coast Guardsmen responding to a fishing boat in distress had to swim to shore after their own boat capsized early Thursday off the Rockaways, the New York Post reported. The 76-foot trawler Carolina Queen III, which had been taking on water, ran aground near the East Rockaway Inlet about 0200 hours. A 25-foot rescue boat was dispatched and encountered 10- to 12-foot waves before capsizing. The five men from Station Jones Beach swam ashore near Beach 19th Street and were treated by emergency medical services. A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City lifted the seven crewmembers off the trawler and took them to Jamaica Hospital. No injuries were immediately reported.
