(NORFOLK, VA — October 11, 2007) Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads and the Virginia Maritime Association are sponsoring a safety seminar for crewmembers that operate commercial tugs. The seminar will take place at the Coast Guard Integrated Support Command in Portsmouth, Va., on Thursday, Oct. 18.
The safety seminar is the only one of its kind in the United States. During the eight-hour day, attendees participate in classroom exercises, listen to presentations by subject matter experts, and are given the opportunity to participate in hands-on training like fighting fires, firing distress signal flares, learning how to put on a survival suit, and board a life raft.
This is the tenth consecutive year of this partnership, an idea born from the Coast Guard’s Prevention Through People Program. The Coast Guard and Virginia Maritime Association invite anyone presently working in the towing industry to attend.
