(MUSKEGON, Mich.) — Area officials are pressing for regulatory changes that would allow Mississippi River barges to pass through the Port of Muskegon, according to a report by MLive Media Group. The Coast Guard is being asked to create an exemption permitting the barges to pass through Chicago and as far north as Muskegon on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. “This is already happening in Milwaukee,” said Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association. “This request is about equity. We are just trying to get what Wisconsin already has. We want the same rights as Milwaukee.”
