Coal-fired SS Badger to steam on with ash retention system

(LUDINGTON, Mich.) — SS Badger, the last coal-fired ship on the Great Lakes, is preparing for the 2015 ferry season with a system designed to keep its coal ash from ending up in Lake Michigan, MLive.com reported. An onboard conveyor will allow ash to be transported from the boiler room to retention containers. The system is necessary to meet the terms of a U.S. Department of Justice consent decree.
