Earlier this morning the Coast Guard’s Sector Command Center recieved notification that the container ship M/V YM TAICHUNG was bound for the Port with the damaged cargo onboard. M/V YM TAICHUNG reported they encountered heavy weather on April 5th, in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1000 nautical miles west of San Francisco.
The vessel was scheduled to arrive at the dock around 9 p.m. tonight. The vessel has been asked to provide a written plan to the local Coast Guard Sector office outlining their efforts for the safe handling and unloading of the containers.
A Coast Guard response team with expertise in facilities and container inspections as well as marine environmental response operations will meet the ship at the dock to monitor cargo operations once a plan has been approved for safely unloading the containers.
