Captain avoids death penalty in Sewol ferry disaster

Sewol

(GWANGJU, South Korea) — The captain of the ferry Sewol was sentenced to 36 years in prison Tuesday for negligence and abandoning passengers when his ship sank in April, BBC News reported. The court acquitted Lee Joon-seok of homicide, concluding there was no proof he knew his actions would cause more than 300 people to die. Victims' relatives criticized the sentences for the captain and other crewmembers as too lenient, with some shouting during the court proceedings.
