Bulker refloated after grounding in Detroit River in high winds

(DETROIT) — A Canadian-flagged bulk carrier that ran aground Wednesday night in the Detroit River was refloated Thursday with the assistance of tugboats, local media reported.

The bulker Robert S. Pierson, en route from Windsor, Ontario, to Lorain, Ohio, with 18,000 tons of stone, reportedly attempted to drop anchor Wednesday night due to strong winds in the area. The ship was pushed downriver, however, and grounded diagonally near William Milliken State Park at about 10:30 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the ship was refloated as of noon Thursday with the aid of two tugboats. There were no injuries and no pollution was reported.

It was the second grounding in less than a month in the same area of the Detroit River. The Canadian-flagged bulk carrier Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin had also attempted to anchor to discharge an ill crewmember on Nov. 7 when the ship grounded. It was refloated the next day with the assistance of four tugs.
