(MONTREAL) — A bulk carrier ran aground Tuesday in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal after losing propulsion, The Canadian Press reported.
Francis Lapointe, a spokesman for the Canadian Coast Guard, said the 590-foot Federal Yamaska ran aground near Vercheres, Quebec, at about 5:45 a.m. following a complete loss of engine power.
No injuries or pollution were reported. Lapointe said the ship, which is carrying sugar, was partially in the channel but other vessels were able to navigate around it.
He said authorities were working with the ship’s owner to come up with a refloating plan, which could take anywhere from several hours to several days.
The Canadian Coast Guard said low water levels in the river don’t appear to have played a role in the grounding.
