Bulk ship slams into dock, spills fuel into Maumee River

(TOLEDO, Ohio) — The 730-foot Algonorth slammed into a Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority dock, the Toledo Blade newspaper reported. The dry-bulk carrier pierced its hull at its stern, rupturing two fuel holds and spilling 3,300 gallons of diesel into the Maumee River. About 100 people were busy attempting to sop up the fuel. The Algoma Central Marine ship, full of grain, was leaving the dock at the time of the casualty. One person suffered a broken arm. A Coast Guard official said water levels and wind and current conditions presented the captain with maneuvering difficulties.
