Barge sinks, dumps 2.4M pounds of fertilizer into James River

(PETERSBURG, Va.) — A sunken barge that dumped 2.4 million pounds of ammonium sulfate into the James River will probably be scrapped, the Progress-Index newspaper reported. The barge sank last month, dumping most of its load of fertilizer into the river. Salvage crews have had trouble raising the barge; an attempt to refloat it using airbags was unsuccessful.
