(CINCINNATI) — An estimated 400,000 gallons of liquid fertilizer is unaccounted for after a barge buckled and leaked Tuesday on the Ohio River, Cincinnati.com reported.
The barge was being offloaded at the Benchmark River and Rails Terminal when an apparent structural failure occurred.
The vessel is owned by Southern Towing Co. of Memphis, Tenn. A company spokesman said Thursday that the chemical, a 32 percent urea ammonium nitrate solution, had stopped leaking.
Officials are trying to determine how much got into the river, how fast it may be moving downstream and at what concentration.
