(BAYONNE, N.J.) — A barge broke from its mooring at Port Newark during a weekend storm, drifted across Newark Bay and grounded in Bayonne, NJ.com reported.
The 276-by-63-foot GL 65, owned by Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, washed ashore sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning. Officials believe the barge struck a pier at 16th Street Park and caused minor damage before it came to a rest near West 21st Street.
An attempt to remove the barge at high tide Monday night was unsuccessful. Great Lakes reportedly planned to try again this weekend, when an astronomical high tide is expected. The company also is bringing in a more powerful tugboat to assist.
