Ballast exemption for Great Lakes ‘salties’ to end Oct. 1

(TOLEDO, Ohio) — An exemption that freed about 90 percent of oceangoing ships from anti-invasive-species ballast rule will be removed Oct. 1, the Toledo Blade reported. The Environmental Protection Agency ordered the new regulation to battle non-native biological pests that enter U.S. waters from overseas. All “salties” entering the Great Lakes system will need to exchange their ballast water at sea.
