St. Johns Ship Building recently delivered crew transfer vessels (CTVs) to Windea and Atlantic Wind Transfers that will support offshore wind farms in the Northeast.

Windea Enterprise is the second CTV the Florida shipyard has completed for Windea CTV, a partnership between Hornblower Wind and MidOcean Wind (MOW). Incat Crowther designed the 98-by-38-foot aluminum catamaran, which draws less than 5 feet.

CTVs are the utility infielder of the offshore wind industry. These vessels carry technicians to and from the turbines during construction and operations. They also can carry cargo on an open forward deck. With crew accommodations on board, these vessels can loiter offshore for days at a time.

CTVs make up to wind turbine towers by approaching bow-first and lining up with the tower base in the vessel’s centerline. Operators use the engines to press against the tower base in dynamic sea conditions.

Windea Enterprise is powered by four 690-hp Volvo Penta D13 engines paired with Volvo Penta IPS drives. Electrical power comes from two Kohler 40-kW generators. The vessel’s top speed is 27 knots, with a service speed of about 25 knots.

“These projects take a long time and have endured trying macroeconomic conditions,” Bradley Neuberth, managing partner of MidOcean Wind and Windea CTV, said in a statement. “It takes real cooperation and collaboration to successfully complete the construction of a CTV, and Windea, MOW, Hornblower Wind and St. Johns have formed a solid foundation which continues to excel as we progress on our third CTV.”

Atlantic Resolute is the shipyard’s third CTV delivery in six months and its first of two sister vessels for Atlantic Wind Transfers using a Chartwell design. The vessel is powered by MAN engines, with Kohler gensets and Furuno navigation electronics. A sister vessel is due for delivery later this year.

“We are pleased to add the delivery of Atlantic Resolute to the growing list of CTVs built and delivered by St. Johns Ship Building,” Joe Rella, shipyard president, said in a statement. “The completion and delivery of this Chartwell-designed vessel exemplifies the shipyard’s versatility in building a wide variety of vessels and designs and is a result of the dedication and hard work of our skilled workforce.”
