Professional Mariner names new editor

Maritime Publishing has named Tim Henry as the new editor of Professional Mariner magazine.

Henry, a lifelong sailor with 10 years of maritime industry reporting experience, has previously worked for newspapers within the United States and overseas. He also edited a sailing publication in Northern California. He replaces Casey Conley, who led the magazine from April 2021 until February 2023, and served as interim editor since April 2024.

“Tim brings a wide range of maritime knowledge and experience to the position, along with a proven journalism background,” Maritime Publishing owner and publisher Dave Abrams said. “We’re thrilled to have him aboard.”

Henry grew up sailing in San Diego, where Maritime Publishing is headquartered, and he considers an 18-day passage to the Tuamotus and Tahiti to be a transformative experience in his life. He later went on to teach sailing for the Navy Sailing Center in Point Loma, Calif., followed by more time at sea, including passages from Hawaii and Washington to California. He spent a few years in New England, including Maine and Massachusetts, surfing and working on boats before getting his journalism degree from San Francisco State in 2008.

Henry worked for a Pulitzer Prize-winning weekly newspaper in Point Reyes, Calif., and an English-language daily paper in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he completed a years long investigation of an oil spill between Australia and Eastern Indonesia. He also was the managing editor of a monthly sailing magazine based near San Francisco, where he developed a maritime beat focusing on shoreline development and the working waterfront.

Henry is an avid windsurfer, as well as a marine artist with a bent toward abstract seascapes. He has combined labor on vessels, messing about with boats, aesthetic interests and investigations of policy into a holistic approach of maritime affairs.

“It’s an honor to be named editor of Professional Mariner,” Henry said. “I look forward to leading a talented group of journalists, continuing the magazine’s legacy of original reporting and photography, and telling the stories of working mariners.”

Maritime Publishing is the owner of Professional Mariner, Ocean Navigator, Pacific Maritime and Fishermen’s News. It also owns The Log, a California newspaper covering boating and fishing news.
