Fire Island Ferries of Bay Shore, N.Y., has taken delivery of a new 70-by-23-foot vehicle ferry that will serve the resort community.
Elliott Bay Design Group (EDBG) of Seattle designed Fire Island Maid, which has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. It features a hydraulic ramp for loading and unloading heavy equipment, according to a news release. Its deck can hold up to 100,000 pounds.
“We are excited to add Fire Island Maid to our fleet of vessels. EBDG listened and provided a more efficient structure and arrangement,” Dave Anderson, general manager of Fire Island Ferries, said in a statement. “I know this new ferry will make a difference for our passengers and shipping customers.”
Propulsion on the vessel comes from two Tier 3 Cummins QSL9 engines paired with Twin Disc gears and a ZF Marine control system. Electrical power comes from a Cummins Onan MDK generator.
The vessel operates with two crewmembers and can carry up to six passengers inside their vehicles.
