Battery Steele, the East Coast’s first electrically propelled ferry, will begin service this fall between Portland and Peaks Island, Maine. The 164-foot hybrid diesel-electric ferry carries up to 599 passengers and 15 vehicles and is designed to operate almost exclusively on battery power.
