(SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.) — The Army Corps of Engineers on June 30 will break ground on the initial stage of a proposed expansion of the Soo Locks, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported. The first $1.9 million will be spent establishing coffer dams that will support the construction of a new lock that will be as big as the neighboring Poe Lock. If approved in its entirety, the whole project could cost $580 million and employ 1,000 people.
