(SITKA, Alaska) — True Alaska Bottling plans to use tanker ships to transport fresh water to India and the Middle East, according to a commentary in the Juneau Empire newspaper. The company will contract with Sitka to remove 3 billion gallons of water annually from Blue Lake. Because of lower tanker rates, it’s cost-effective to sail the water to Mumbai, where the water will be bottled for sale in the Middle East.
