Alaska borough offers to give away Susitna ferry for free

(MATANUSKA-SUSITNA, Alaska) — Alaska's Matanuska-Susitna Borough is tired of paying $90,000 a month to maintain the ice-breaking ferry Susitna and is offering to give the $80 million vessel away, the news website Alaska Dispatch reported. In a letter to the Passenger Vessel Association, the borough said it is offering the highly touted but idle ferry free of charge to any other municipality that wants it. There are even $6 million in unspent Federal Transit Authority funds available to the government entity that claims the boat, which is said to be the world's first icebreaking catamaran.
