After budget request, Coast Guard highlights woeful vessels

(WASHINGTON) — In the immediate aftermath of its 2009 fiscal budget request, the Coast Guard is publicly highlighting some of its older, shoddier vessels, the Navy Times reported. Commandant Adm. Thad Allen plans two speeches in the next week in which he is expected to propose solutions for the problem of broken-down cutters. One vessel, the Acushnet, recently lost its propeller at sea; the design was so old that the new screw had to be custom-made.
