(OTTAWA) — Chantier Davie Canada has made an unsolicited bid to the Trudeau government to provide icebreakers and multipurpose ships for the Canadian Coast Guard, CBC News reported. The proposal by the Quebec-based shipbuilder — worth up to $1 billion — has the potential to undercut a pillar of the national shipbuilding strategy, which delegates the construction of non-combat vessels to Vancouver's Seaspan. Davie's "fast-track solution" would involve building a Polar Class 3 icebreaker and delivering it in 18 months, along with constructing three smaller River-class icebreakers and two multipurpose ships.
