Judge sets deadline for El Faro claims; sixth lawsuit filed

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) — A federal judge has ruled that families of crewmembers lost in the El Faro sinking must file a claim against shipowner TOTE Maritime by Dec. 21 and must do so in Jacksonville, First Coast News reported. The court order, signed Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Harvey Schesinger, prevents victims' families from filing claims against TOTE after that 45-day deadline and outside of that venue. The order came on the same day that a sixth El Faro lawsuit was filed against the company, this one on behalf of Patrick Smith, the son of mariner Howard John Schoenly.
