Ohio River bridge reopens after barge strike

(CAIRO, Ill.) — The U.S. 51 bridge over the Ohio River was closed for an hour and a half Thursday morning after being struck by a barge, the Southeast Missourian reported. The towboat Arthur E. Snyder was pushing five empty barges when a wind gust pushed the tow into one of the bridge piers. The barge that hit the pier sustained a telephone-pole-sized dent and the impact snapped cables securing the tow.
