Zigzagging towboats, barges complicate plans for new I-5 bridge

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) — Mariners say a new, taller Interstate 5 bridge would be safer for navigation, The Columbian newspaper reported. Replacing the drawbridge with a taller span would eliminate the need to zigzag towboats and barges in the channel after they transit a nearby railroad bridge. The new I-5 bridge over the Columbia River would cost $600 million to $818 million.
