(NEW YORK) — WQIS, the largest underwriter of pollution liability insurance for marine vessels in the U.S., has created the new position of chief operating officer and — following an extensive search — has selected Justin A. Mongello to fill that role, as well as that of senior vice president.

A native of Monroe, N.Y., Mongello holds a bachelor of science degree in marine transportation from the State University of New York Maritime College. With almost 20 years as a proven team leader in underwriting, with firms such as Zurich North America, Swiss Reinsurance Corp and Liberty International Underwriters, Mongello brings a high-level of marine knowledge and insurance experience combined with a robust, client-centric focus and enthusiasm.

“My aim has always been to match the needs of assureds and broker partners with outstanding capabilities, and with this incredible team here at WQIS, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing,” said Mongello. “I look forward to continuing to build on the culture of the customer-centric team, and demonstrating our focus and expertise to the pollution and COFR markets.”

The new COO position was created to further strengthen the senior management team, and to provide a liaison between top-ranked WQIS personnel and the insurance/broker community. As COO, Mongello’s responsibilities will include overseeing the company’s reinsurance placements, and nurturing subscriber partnerships, as well as the management of the portfolio’s compliance. Mongello’s unique background will also allow him to oversee and enhance the professional development of the underwriting team.

“We’re excited to have Justin on board,” said John Ryszetnyk, CEO of WQIS. “His extensive marine experience combined with deep underwriting knowledge and operational background help to solidify our industry-leading team.”

Founded in 1971, WQIS has over 40 years of experience as a specialist in the industry, focusing on the issues of marine pollution insurance. WQIS provides vessel pollution liability insurance for over 30,000 vessels operating worldwide. WQIS also provides insurance guaranties for over 3,500 vessels to satisfy laws in the United States and signatory states of the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage (Bunker Convention), and the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage (CLC).
