Woods Hole-based oceanography robot ABE lost at sea (PHOTO)

(WOODS HOLE, Mass.) — The undersea Autonomous Benthic Explorer robot has been lost at sea off Chile, the New York Times reported. The Woods Hole-based underwater vehicle, which was transported on the research ship Melville, is better known as ABE. Oceanographic officials said the famous exploration pioneer had multiple catastrophic failures and is not recoverable.
