Victoria Barge Canal closed after gravel barge strikes bridge fender

The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:
 
(VICTORIA, Texas) — The Coast Guard has closed the Victoria Barge Canal after an outbound gravel barge allided with the fender system of a railroad bridge, Thursday.
 
Watchstanders at the Sector Corpus Christi received a call at approximately 1 a.m., from the bridge tender to report the incident. Marine investigators from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Victoria were dispatched to the scene to assess damages and investigate the incident and determined there was no pollution in the water. Officials from the Port of Victoria are inspecting the bridge to evaluate any potential damage.

The Victoria Barge Canal will remain closed until determined safe for transit.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
