Two killed when boat, towboat collide on Ohio River

(CINCINNATI) — Two men were killed when their pleasure boat collided with a towboat Thursday night on the Ohio River, the New York Daily News reported. The accident occurred near downtown Cincinnati as the towboat was guiding a barge. Both of the victims were off-duty FBI employees.

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(CINCINNATI) — The Coast Guard is investigating a fatal collision between a towboat and a pleasure craft near Cincinnati, Thursday evening.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Ohio River Valley received notification of the incident from the Bellvue-Dayton Fire Department, who conducted initial response efforts along with Cincinnati Fire Department and Newport Fire Department.

The Coast Guard responded by issuing an urgent marine information broadcast to boaters and establishing a safety zone in the vicinity of the incident.

“We offer deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this incident,” said Capt. Richard Timme, commander, Sector Ohio Valley. “The Coast Guard will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.”

CINCINNATI (Adam Clements) — Two FBI employees were killed when their party boat collided with a barge on the Ohio River Thursday night. The two men were the only two on the boat at the time and speed and alcohol is believed to be a factor. The barge was going northbound carrying limestone and the boat was heading southbound when the collision happened. All the lights were on both vessels. The accident happened between the Taylor Southgate Bridge and the Purple People Bridge. The barge was moved near the Covington Landing.
