Two former chief engineers plead guilty in Fla. ‘magic pipe’ case

(TAMPA, Fla.) — Two former chief engineers of a Panamanian ship pleaded guilty to dumping oily sludge into the ocean, the Tampa Tribune reported. Both men admitted that they rigged the cargo ship’s systems to bypass pollution controls. Federal prosecutors said the ‘magic pipe’ incidents occurred aboard the bulk ship Balsa-62 in 2007.
