Tug sinks while docked in Newfoundland

(STEPHENVILLE, Newfoundland) — A tugboat sank Monday morning at the Stephenville wharf with approximately 1,850 gallons (7,000 liters) of diesel fuel on board, CBC News reported.

Omni St. Laurent was docked when it sank, although the exact cause is unclear. No one was on board at the time.

A Canadian Coast Guard environmental response team is on site to monitor the area, with containment booms already placed around the boat, said a representative of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

A co-owner of the tugboat, Kevin Strickland, told CBC it passed a Transport Canada inspection in June.
