(SAN DIEGO) — Training Resources Limited, DBA Maritime Institute (TRLMI) announced on Oct. 28 that it will be acquiring the assets of Honolulu-based Maritime License Center (MLC) and starting training programs in Hawaii in January 2022.

“Acquiring the Maritime License Center facilities will allow us to serve the certified U.S. Coast Guard training needs for the maritime community in Hawaii,” said Dave Abrams, CEO of TRLMI. “MLC has an outstanding reputation for taking care of their students, and because of that they were a great fit for our culture. We hope to significantly expand the number of courses that are offered to mariners in Hawaii and the western Pacific.”

A local mariner, Capt. Harry Sprague, formerly with the local Marimed Foundation, has been hired by TRLMI to run the Hawaii operations. “It is important for us to have local connections to the maritime community and we hope to hire more local mariners as we grow our business in Hawaii,” Abrams said.

Chuck Howard, president of Maritime License Center, added, “We are very proud to be joining forces with TRLMI. Their facilities and instructors are first class and I know they will take great care of our students. As I retire, I can’t think of a better company to fill that void. We welcome TRLMI to our Hawaii ohana.”

The transaction is expected to close by Dec. 1., and the company will hold a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at the training facility in the Honolulu Sailor’s Home before classes start in January.
