Towboat crewman in W.V. drowns after false ‘all clear’ signal

(KENOVA, W.V.) — A towboat crewman drowned after falling off his vessel as a result of a false “all-clear” signal from someone else, the Herald-Dispatch newspaper reported. While disconnecting from barges near the confluence of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers, the MV Tri-State captain throttled the engine while the crewman was still disconnecting one line even though someone had already said “all clear.” The 25-year-old man fell into the water and was sucked underneath a barge.
