Death toll hits three after sailboat, barge collide near Miami Beach

(MIAMI) — A 10-year-old girl has become the third person to die after a sailboat and barge collided near Miami Beach, CBS12 News reported Monday.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the death of the girl in an X post on Sunday, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that investigators announce the passing of the 10-year-old child who was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.”

At about 11:15 a.m. on July 28, the Miami Beach Police Department said it received a call about a boating accident involving one adult woman and five youths, participants from the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, north of Hibiscus Island.

According to the Coast Guard, the collision occurred between Monument Island and Hibiscus Island. The sailboat sank and the six people aboard were rescued within an hour.

Officials said three of the people were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where a 7-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead. A third girl, who was in critical condition, died Sunday.

The Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the incident.
