Testimony: El Faro's weather forecast was hours old

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) — The officers aboard El Faro received hurricane forecasts that may have been about nine hours old, according to testimony at a Coast Guard investigative hearing, television station WJXT reported. Executives from Applied Weather Technology, which offers the BonVoyage weather service, said there is a lag between when the National Weather Service issues an update to when that data is loaded onto the BonVoyage system. In separate testimony at the hearing, an American Bureau of Shipping inspector testified about the ill-fated ship's last inspection, which occurred in June 2015.
