SS United States saved from scrap after $5.8M donation (VIDEO)

(PHILADELPHIA) — The philanthropist Gerry Lenfest has pledged $5.8 million to save the nation’s former flagship SS United States from the scrap yard, the Philadelphia Daily News newspaper reported. The historic liner’s owner, Norwegian Cruise Line, had offered the rusting vessel for sale, and conservationists feared that it would be destined for a scrap yard. Lenfest’s money will be used to purchase the ship, probably in 2011, and to maintain it until a new use can be identified.
