Ship’s engineer charged with dumping oily waste at sea

(OAKLAND, Calif.) — A ship’s chief engineer was charged with ordering the illegal dumping of oily waste at sea through a “magic pipe,” the Associated Press reported. Operator Genesis Seatrading Corp. and the vessel’s owner also were charged. Federal prosecutors said the Rio Gold’s engineer also falsified log books; he was expected to plead not guilty.
