Ship grounded off Cape Breton contains more asbestos, diesel than estimated

(HALIFAX, Nova Scotia) — A derelict ship off Cape Breton contains more asbestos and diesel fuel than previously thought, the Cape Breton Post reported. Nova Scotia's transportation minister said the federal government should contribute financially to remove the bulk carrier M/V Miner, which ran aground on Scatarie Island after a tow line snapped in rough seas in September 2011. The federal government's position has been the ship isn't an environmental threat and the responsibility for removal lies with the owner, Arvina Navigation.
