Schooner Virginia laid up after foundation goes broke

(NORFOLK, Va.) — The Commonwealth of Virginia’s flagship schooner is laid up at a Norfolk dock because its nonprofit foundation owner is out of money, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. The schooner Virginia will not compete in the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race at Portsmouth, and the vessel’s paid staff were fired. The Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation is out of money and owes $1.6 million in debts.
