(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) — Scientists are studying a sunken World War II-era tanker to determine if its cargo is at risk of leakage, the Santa Barbara Independent reported. The SS Montebello was hit by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine off California in 1941. A robotic semisubmersible will examine the wreck for signs that the ship’s 3 million gallons of crude oil could be in danger of leaking into the ocean.
