Possibly on final voyage, Oceanic heads toward Guam

(GUAM) — The SS Oceanic is headed toward Guam, probably on its way to a shipbreaking yard in Asia, the Hawaii Reporter and Voice of America reported. The old cruise liner, which had been moored at San Francisco, probably needs to stop at Guam for refueling. Activists are trying to halt the voyage because they fear the vessel has too much toxic material to be taken apart safely by shipbreakers. Formerly known as the SS Independence, the vessel is the last U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged passenger liner.
