Philanthropist pledges $300K to help preserve SS United States

(PHILADELPHIA) — The philanthropist Gerry Lenfest has pledged a matching grant of $300,000 to help the SS United States Conservancy purchase the nation’s former flagship steam liner, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The conservancy plans a dinner in Philadelphia to raise awareness and funds for the decaying vessel, which has been languishing at a South Philadelphia dock for years. Norwegian Cruise Lines still owns the SS United States.
