Panama Canal official: Houston port stands to gain from canal expansion (WITH AUDIO)

(HOUSTON) — Maritime officials at the Port of Houston heard from a Panama Canal official who said his canal's expansion will shift a lot of seagoing cargo toward East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, Houston Public Media reported. Ports east of the canal, including Houston, have a prospect of gaining 10 percent more cargo from Asia, said Manuel Benitez, the canal authority's deputy administrator. He said the expansion project will be finish by April 2016.
