(MONETA, Va.) — A crane operator was killed when his equipment slipped off a barge and fell into Smith Mountain Lake, the Roanoke Times newspaper reported. The 55-year-old man was dismantling wood pilings to remove a dock when the crane fell 50 feet into the water. A state official said workers may need to bring in two cranes to pull the fallen crane out of the water.
