Ohio River lock gate that broke off was past its projected life span

(MADISON, Ind.) — The Markland Lock gate that broke off its hinges and sank had shown no sign of imminent failure, the Madison Courier newspaper reported. Witnesses said it sounded like an explosion. The 280-ton leaf gate was past its projected life span and was scheduled to be replaced in 2010, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
