Officials tout Arkansas River as next ‘liquid highway’ for freight

(VAN BUREN, Ark.) — Officials are touting the Arkansas River as a potential “liquid highway” for carrying goods, the Alma Journal and Press Argus-Courier reported. Federal officials toured the Arkansas River navigation system last week to inspect the waterway and locks. The system is being used at an estimated 20 to 30 percent of capacity and has the potential to double the amount of trade it carries.
