Obama calls for expanded fleet of Arctic icebreakers

(SEWARD, Alaska) — President Obama on Tuesday called for new Coast Guard icebreakers for the Arctic, citing the growing number of Russian ships in the rapidly changing polar region, The New York Times reported. The administration said the Coast Guard has just two "fully functional" heavy icebreakers at its disposal, down from seven during World War II. Obama is seeking to accelerate the acquisition of a replacement icebreaker by two years, setting a new date of 2020.
