Nova Star Cruises files for bankruptcy

(PORTLAND, Maine) — Nova Star Cruises, the former operator of a ferry between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, has filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada, the Bangor Daily News reported. In bankruptcy documents published last week, the company claimed $12 million in debt against about $112,000 in assets. The list of creditors includes the city of Portland, Portland Tugboat and Portland Pilots Inc. Nova Star Cruises received subsidies from the province of Nova Scotia for two seasons operating M/V Nova Star and missed ridership projections for both years.
