(MOBILE, Ala.) — The U.S. Navy christened its newest Independence-class littoral combat ship, the future USS Charleston (LCS 18), during a ceremony Saturday at Austal USA, NavalTechnology.com reported.

USS Charleston is the seventh LCS being built by the company under a 12-ship contract valued at more than $3.5 billion. It is the sixth Navy ship to be named in honor of the South Carolina city.

The Navy christened the Independence-class USS Tulsa (LCS 16) on Feb. 11. Austal is expected to deliver its next LCS to the Navy in the coming weeks, USS Omaha (LCS 12).
